A FEW MORE PICS FROM CAPEHOUSE WKND

FANTABULOUS CAPEHOUSE WEEKEND!

Another awesome FOJ weekend hosted by Frank at the Capehouse, with the highlights being celebrating Dana's 16th birthday and cruising up and down the Rappahannock in Frank's new baby, First Lite! Got some pretty good shots of the crew on board. Chef Jaybird outdid himself again with his shrimp and sausage kabobs with goat cheese. That grill was a meat lovers' heaven mix of shrimp, sausage, chicken, venison and kielbasa! Got to watch an amazing light show from a storm within a cloud out on the boat at the mouth of the creek after dark. Vickie, I was doing pretty good taking your place with the pic-taking till all that delicious food spread out on the table, and then I don't know what happened to that photographer. Guess she had too many "Sea Breezes"; thank you Luz! LOL! Jim, please continue the story with your pics, as I seem to have fallen down on the job. A fantabulous weekend, Frank! Happy 16th Birthday, Dana! See y'all at Vickie's Beach Party!

Tick tick tick....

It's that time of the year. Excellent article with more than you probably want to know about ticks. Slate.com is a great daily site. Check out Dear Prudence on Thursdays.

A Tick's Life

The first in a series on revolting creatures.

The tick's life is simple, fairly boring, but urgent. No host, no blood meal, and the tick dies. There's only one blood meal for each of the three stages of a tick's life—larva, nymph, and adult. At each stage, every one of the tick's behaviors has been honed by evolution to sense a victim and latch on.... Male and female engage in an impressive combination of gourmandise and lust. Maybe not lust exactly; for the female, it's more like being interrupted at breakfast by the UPS guy, with a package of perishables....." When does the male die?" I asked Durland Fish, who studies tick-borne pathogens at the Yale University School of Public Health. "When he runs out of energy or sperm, whatever comes first," Dr. Fish replied..... And the tick's place in the great web of life? "They transmit disease. They control population."

Several Things...

Dana Early Constanzer turns 16 on July 2nd. Frank is inviting Friends Of Jay, and anyone they wish to invite, to CapeHouse the weekend prior to her birthday. Bring tent, bag, pad in case the beds are taken. If it is too hot to sleep in a tent, there will be air conditioned floor space inside. Bring whatever food you want, a grill will be going Fri. & Sat. night. (Might bring some charcoal too.)

That Sunday, July 29th Hudson is playing fiddle with Tiger Lilly, opening for Seldom Scene, near Charlottesville. Email callidusbt@aol.com for directions, or just follow Jim & me from CapeHouse.

Last thing: Frank wanted me to let you folks know that Pete's canoe is up for sale: $500. He can't see himself paddling it (neither can I). The boat is in good shape and sells new for $1,300. He just put it in The Trading Post, so call him soon if you have questions or wish to purchase (I don't know details). Frank's cell: 804 922-3506

Lex Vegas 2008 Edition!

What an awesome Lex Vegas 2008! Thank you so much to our hosts Esther and Rick for letting the FOJ gang invade your beautiful home! Those who bailed... you missed out on Esther's fabulous cooking, a birthday cake for Carolyn with Rick's fingerprint on it: sorry, it looks like I forgot my SD card somewhere so those pics to come later... Thanks much to Hudson, Jeni, Nate for all the logistics of such a fantastic week-end! Lots of partying, laughter, walks in the beautiful garden and neighborhood, fun time on the rivah, encounter with a snake (jeez, good thing it was already full of that fish...), and much more! It was great to meet Janice and her cute daughter and have Carly and Jason hanging out too! This was like a vacation you don't want to end! It's ALMOST as good as the ocean... you know, there are still no dolphins in the river... LOL

Luv,

Alley Katz and Canal Club

Fun time last weekend checking out the music of our younger Friends Of Jay. Friday night Race The Sun, which includes Chris Brown, (Carly's) Jason Sower, and our favorite Scotsman, James Henderson, performed their first reunion show at Alley Katz. Place was packed, about 200 degrees fahrenheit, and the excitement level was off the charts! Jim's ears stopped ringing by Sunday when we went to hear Derek Rice's band, We Are Bears, play at the Canal Club (air conditioned...yessss!!!) It is so great to be included in these young folks' lives. My picture-taking leaves a lot to be desired and our camera is now behind the technological curve but you will get the taste....

Blackbeard Festival - Hampton

Thanks a gazillion Susan and Wayne for letting us use the condo and boat this week-end! We MISSED YOU!!! We had tons of fun, cooked-out, tried the best Vanilla Rum and Lime Tequila with some Pirates that were very willing to share, listened to some songs that could get you deported for profanity, took a tour of the Virginia tall ship and listened very attentively to the explanations of a cute student/sailor. Thank you Nate for treating us to lunch! Kathy found her own pirate, who kept posing for 5 minutes after the picture was taken... We saw the coolest birds, yes sorry, birds again... Fantastic time and great weather with only the fireworks missing. Here are some pics. I've got videos too but can't put them here yet.
Enjoy!
