Last minute change of plan meant we switched from Dolly Sods to Laurel Forks for our week-end of exploration and nature. Thank you so much Jimmy and Carolyn for guiding us through this wonderful hidden spot! We didn't see anyone else the entire time. Some good hiking, camping, fire and just a great time in the middle of the woods. I know it doesn't give it justice but here's a sample of pics to give you an idea!

Do you mean we may be fighting bears tonight???

Never thought fungus could actually look cool...

Blue crawfish, from what Nathan found out, pretty rare in the area.

Better get the food in a safe place...

Isn't he cute?

WOW, beautiful pictures Vickie.
There is nothing better than being so close to nature. Looks like you guys really enjoyed your hike. I’m jealous. You can include me on the next trip.
Carolyn you are the WOMEN!
You give us all such great inspiration.
See you guys Friday night.
Love,
Luz
Hey, wassup with keeping this trip a secret? Count me in too on the next one!
Thanks for sharing your pics they are great! Sorry for waking you in the middle of the night to hear the owl call but I wanted you to hear it(even with your earplugs in) :) You are quite the trooper in the great wild - I was very impressed! You are OFFICIALLY off the the FOJ Indoor Adventure Crew now! But you do snore though!
I thought I was already off the Indoors crew after our last ski trip!!! I guess, I'm either bringing my own tent next time or another set of earplugs for you... must have something to do with the fact I haven't had the time to go get my allergy shots in 3 weeks...
Sorry, FOJ. Did not mean to sneak out on you. This trip originally had been planned by Jay and Mary Beth months ago. Last year we went off into Dolly Sods for Labor Day weekend. We planned to do it again. Jay likes small backpacking groups because often it is difficult to find a campsite for more than a couple of tents. Anyhow, at the last minute, Jay had to bow out due to illness and a sore back. We chose Laurel Fork because it was a tad closer than the Sods, and Nathan had always heard of it and had never been. I just don't know why we never invited him in the past! How did we overlook such an easy-going, fun-loving hiking companion?
And truly, Vickie, you are a natural hiker/camper. Jim and I were very impressed with you. Thanks for the crazy cans of pear schnapps!
The gorgeous pics remind me of my backpacking days in college. We schlogged up and down the Appalachian Trail, even in the snow. I was NOT liking that! But I have many fond memories that came back from looking at those glorious pictures! I am glad you had a great time. We were at the beach.... of course. Now we are watching the weather because of the tropical waves!
