Jim and I took off to see our buddy Nick LaFone in Asheville, NC on New Year's Day. We had no idea that Asheville was such a big place for art and artists! We spent one day touring galleries. As Nick put it: it gets overwhelming. I don't think we saw a tenth of what was in town. We did not even get to go in the places in the River Art District. We drove through it - old warehouses along the French Broad River. Jim & I were pretty impressed with Nick's artwork. He is making pottery using a method called saggar firing. He puts stuff like copper wire or masking tape on it prior to firing to create designs. He has also made pots out of large gourds with pine tag rims. In one of his bedrooms, the wall hosts a large drumming indian (minus the drum - it is not finished) made of stretched canvas. Saturday we needed to get back in touch with nature, so Nick took us to Dupont State Forest. We were all taking photos and were in awe of the waterfalls. We hated to leave Asheville Sunday. There is so much that we did not see or experience. Next time!!!
