So I have officially started my kayaking season... I took my boat out this afternoon for a nice paddle and it was really quiet, no one out there except for one kayaker who was fishing. I got to see tons of egrets, one other cool bird (don't know what it is so please enlight me...) and I disturbed an ospray nest. I thought the osprays were going to gang up on me and attack since I was so close to the nest... Beautiful day to be outside.
Now, it's time to grill out. My sis and brother-in-law will be here shortly for some pork chops and veggi kebabs :) Have a fantabulous week-end,

Nice shots Vickie. My friend Julie who is becoming an avid bird watcher says it is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron.

Thanks for the info Billy! I love watching birds too. I shot some short videos too but the kayak was moving too much and the current kept drifting me too fast.
Vickie,
That's great that you got out to do some paddling. I went to the river this weekend and the water was still too cold for kayaking in the mountains. I did find some more morels and some wild asparagus so all was not lost. Can't wait to hit the water with you soon!
Well, it must have been a great day for heading to the river, as I joined some friends on the Chickahominy. I'm anxious to get my boat in the water too! Can't wait till the next FOJ adventure! Great shots, Vickie! I was going to guess that bird is some sort of Heron.
I was surprised that the water was actually pretty warm but of course, in the bay, it's normal. You can always get a good wetsuit for the chilly river, specially with a WW boat! I can't wait to go back out with you all. More morels and asparagus, yummy! What kind of recipe did you use for your feast this time?
Kathy, I also thought the Yellow-crowned had to be in the heron family but I am clueless about wildlife. I'm glad I learned something! It's really a pretty bird!
The pix are FANTASTIC! Can't wait to get out there!
Good catch, Billy (and Julie). I was going to guess an immature Great Blue Heron. I have never seen a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron. Really exciting!
Jim & I rode our bikes to the Manchester Earth Day and had a really fun day. Luz met up w/ us as well as Matt (Jim works w/ him) and his wife, Jackie and 4 month old Kyler. Caught some good bands, ate some good food at Plant Zero, and laughed a lot.
Before we went to Earth Day we stopped by MCV to visit Lauren's ex-boyfriend and still friend, and our friend, Phil Williams. He was in a bicycle accident last week. While riding at night in VCU area, another cyclist T-boned him in an intersection. Seems like they crashed heads...Phil has no facial abrasions a if he hit the pavement. His face must have hit the other guy's skull. The other guy had a fractured skull. Phil has a broken nose and broken bones in his face. Drs. did reconstructive surgery last Thursday. Poor Phil looked so bad - eyes purple and swollen shut, head twice the normal size of a human head, but he was still positive and joking. Send good vibes to him. He's a really good person!
Thanks Hudson! Feel free to come down anytime, whenever you allow yourself a break from working on the house!
Carolyn, sending all the good vibes I can through the internet for Phil. It sounds very painful. I hope they will both recover quickly. Did they have helmets?

No helmets
It must just have been a yakking moment! Carroll and I went on the James Saturday for a short float with Barry and Melissa. We had our poles and bait but they didn't and the water was so swift, that we made the trip to westview in under two hours!!! wassup with that?
At least we were all adventuring on the water, albeit in different locations! It's all good.
We saw little wildlife but also NO humans, how great is that?
Regina
Glad to hear you all had fun on the river Regina! How about pictures? You didn't take any? Well, hope to see you soon!
